My second Dream CDI

Post by ragpicker »

Hi Ron,

Thanks very much for giving me the RXG/135 cdi. It is fantastic on my bike... I want 2 more of these - One for an old friend's bike (I did about 25000 km on this bike) and another as a spare for both my RX135 and my friends' ... sad that you want to stop manufacture of this kit... I wish every RX owner in India could experience this. After the CDI doing wonders on my RD, i wanted to try the magnificent electronics for my RX too... now i'm hoping you can provide some goodies for my carb-gypsy too ;-)

Seems like the bike was hibernating all this while since i brought it way back in 1999. Now the bike has a new life... i guess most of you have heard this often about the Dream CDI... Anyways for me who has been on that bike for nearly a decade, found the engine purring so smoothly... that i can only explain by comparing to the earlier run of the bike. Earlier, the engine used to get spurts/bursts of power from the engine. This one gets used to and develops into a riding style... (If 2 friends brought 2 bicyles from the same shop the same day, they would know each other's bicycles from the style within a week even if they look exactly the same) .... after putting in the Dream cdi, this fundamental thing changes... the bike is getting so much more power and is riding so much more smoothly the riding style relaxes so so much... Have been riding around town with the new cdi and i have been smiling at the new style the device brings to the bike... must check out the mileage thing... earlier while doing a mileage ride used to get around 40km per liter ... looks like i will get much more if i try it with this... Now i want to runn-in my bike all over again with the Dream CDI !!!! Ron pulllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease...keep it going in production

Now let me tell you all, about the what i did..... decided that i have enough brains to install it after reading the doc. Removed the tank and seat on the bike and could easily access the stock cdi. Put the Dream CDI in and figured out the wires... found that orange wire happened to be the yellow wire and that's it. Kicked it to life !!! The instructions are simple for a novice such as myself too....

In fact on the day we had the long ride down mysore road, i was asking ron and sunmysore if i needed to advance the timing... :-) since i have not advanced the timing, it feels like i'm sitting on a bomb waiting to explode... will keep you all posted on more changes....

Cheers

Thanks for the kind words. Just a few pointers.
You wont see any increase in power or mileage unless you advance the timing. The only thing you will get will be very good over rev in the lower gears.

The reason you atribute to the stock bikes roughness and differences in the way each bike runs is because of two reasons.

a. The stock CDI tends to have very erratic timing which jumps around like crazy. First observed this on bike lovers RXZ.

b. Im yet to figure out what the stock timing on a RXG or RXZ is supposed to be. Every bike ive tested has a different setting.

THese are the two factors which contribute to the points you made.

Next thing you need to try on your RX would be a Chinoy filter and jet kit ;)

Wow, did not realise that it was nearly 6 months ago that i brought the cdis for my 4speed rx135 .... the cdi on my rd350 has been running great ever since the install got done... wanted to enjoy the cdi on the rx135 too but it has taken quite a while for me to finally get it running properly... the rdd cdi is quite a piece of engineering which needs all related components to be 100% pucca... below is what happened in all these months....

First installed the cdi on the rx without advancing and found it very smooth ... and was running without advancing the timing... after posting feedback here and reading up on the forum, install doc, realised that an advance on the timing is a must for more magic...

Drilled a hole which was more than advance enuf and in the process cracked the plate.... rolled back the old slot and kept going...

Then went out of town for a couple of months, came back and the bike would not start at all... checked the battery and it was dead too... resolved to have it checked, plonked the old cdi back started using it to commute... on the old timing itself...

Started looking for a plate and could not find one easily....

Ron gave me a plate to use and then one fine day friends on rdd came by to help me out with my install...

The bike started moving, but only backwards

tried rolling back and blew the coils .... put the bike back on the old cdi and continued use... realised that i needed to figure out my wiring and also requested friends on rdd to help get me a brand new plate and coils...

went off to the usa for a few weeks and when i got back, i had waiting for me a full new wiring set and a brand new plate which was slotted with coils and all was set... wow........ all thanks to friends i made here on rdd...

finally last weekend all the stars got aligned and did the full install... new battery, new wiring, new rectifier, new plate nothing left to chance this time... and after a few hours the bike got a new life....

Thanks Ron, Thanks Shuvo and Thanks Teji.... patience is a virtue possesed by you few...

This bike has been with me for the past 10 years nearly and i cannot part with it at all... this is my bread and butter bike.... it got stolen once and the cops found it after 8 months....... so i guess its going to be with me till i die or till i cannot ride.... thus the need to give it all the goodies... had got it ported for only top end when i was in bombay and it makes power only after 5000rpm... now even in the lower revs there is a significant difference in performance... the cdi is now working with timing advanced and is making much more power on each explosion and is running much smoother than ever before... smoked quite a few monkeys on various bikes the past couple of days... rxzs, pulsars and enjoying myself bigtime.... when i ride the bike it is with a big grin plastered on my face...

Thanks again to RDD .... you guys would have heard this many many times but well ... i guess the distinction here is of the slowest install on the group

Next step is new barrel for my 135 and the jets and Chinoy Filter.... wonder when i will get there... but promise to keep all posted... have been thinking of THE setup for my 135 and yet to freeze on it...

Ron, will return the plate you gave me with some goodies of the season too

cheers
