RDD Fun City Setup - Thanks a Ton Ron
Huge thanks to Ron for sparing time (of which he has little) to do up my bike and kudos to him for making it such an enjoyable ride. Bike is basically setup for the city ride and the occasional long ride (which is now very enticing especially if it has some twisties thrown in )
Bike Setup :
Barrels and Head: Done by RDD
Pistons : Wisecos .75 oversize
Reeds: RZ reeds
CDI : What else other than the RDD Digital CDI Ver. 2
Carbs : Stock carbs (Bikes weakest link now)
Filters : Mesh filter with Chinoy Filter wrap (something that needs to be taken care of)
Barrels and Heads: This is the secret of all the fun factor. From a crap LT to an LT-HT combo; which gives ample power just from the word go. Power comes real fast (that must be an understatement) and smooth and revs out quite freely. Not an all out setup for raw top end or top sped but for fun throughout with a very wide power band anybody can enjoy. Head mods helped the bike to rev out faster. I really have to vouch for the quality of rebores and tolerances.....Bike runnin need not be a nightmare anymore.....
Pistons: Was previously running TKRs so the change was simply mind blowing. I think anybody doing up an engine should have the pistons as their no. 2 priority since this makes a huge huge difference. Anybody who is into touring on their RDs should also consider Wisecos as i think they are just superb for touring. A special note of thanks to Ron for ceramic coating the pistons and going through the trouble of assembling mybike twice. Trust me no tuner in the world will go through the that much trouble; if you ask for something late you simply dont get it. Wisecos along with the ceramic coating took away all the heating issues my bike had (which brings me to the CDI too).
Downside of wisecos can be a noisy engine and an extra long warmup in the morning....anybody who does not have the patience for that dont deserve the gains....
Reeds: As ron says "The faster bike will always be running these....." Go for it....the throttle response is crisp and delicious......the bike again responses cleanly through the rev range....
Carbs: Stock carbs....Jetted by Ron....needs replacement soon....
Let me save the best for the last!
RDD Digital CDI: This should the first thing that we should plonk into the bike.....truly amazing....I went from a Shogun CDI to this and the difference left me dumbstruck...Eliminated the stone wall at high rpms...Apart from the immediate gains through the powerband......which relates to a higher revving machine....with the bike feeling much more freely revving, the real difference is on long rides I guess. The bike runs like strong for longer distances, and it just urges you to ride faster and harder. The harder and faster you ride the bike runs cooler....or lets say the bike just runs at the right temp continuously....You cannot dream of running you bike for long distances without this. Seems like a dream......
Overall the bike has turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable ride....worth all the sacrifices I made....all credit goes to Ron and RDD.... Bike still is not running at full potential as the timing it not very advanced....need to advance and then savour the real potential......need to round up the whole setup with a pair of good carbs, filters and rods too.....waiting for Ron to spare some more time......
Cheers

I didn't even know such a thing existed. Does this make the pistons heavier? What factors make a piston better for touring? Which piston has the LEAST inertia (in other words, which is the LIGHTEST one.... Pro-X?)ceramic coating the pistons

Part 2:
There has been more developments and it been more of a journey....feels like its time to put down my thoughts(its long overdue) and its thanksgiving day!
Its like the pride you have, seeing your kid grow up to be what you expected him/her to be...the sense of achievement....the joy.....
Now the mod list looks something like this:
Barrels and Head: Done by RDD
Pistons : 65mm Wisecos pistons
Crank Rods: RDD Rods with special roller bearings
Crank: Reset, balanced and welded RDD crank
Reeds: RZ reeds
CDI : RDD Digital CDI Ver. 2
Carbs : Stock carbs (jetted for Chinoy Filter filters and port setup)
Filters : Chinoy Filter pod filters
One of the lessons I had to learn the hard way is to build the bike bottom up....you need a strong bottom end to sustain any RDD topend mods....
The rebuild bottom end along with Wisecos transformed the engine entirely...it felt strong and sweet at the same time...she now has that growl all through the rev range....It showed how much important the whole bottom end is to the overall feel of the bike....earlier there was some rattling sound (which i ignorantly attributed to wisecos) which is completely resolved now and the wisecos also seem to be very much silent.....the bigger piston has contributed to kick ass low end and the engine pulls all the way from off the throttle to the redline...
The bike with the new rebuild ran on Chinoy Filter filters and bigger main jet and new pilots...the day i changed to the Chinoy Filter's it was a revelation....the bike felt free as a bird in the sky....the intake growl or sometimes a snarl brings a big smile to you face....blip the throttle and she responds instantly....the pilots (size 40) means starting is a breeze even on cold mornings....the bike moves just off the throttle....damn...these are just spoiling me....
I have not taken her on a long ride yet....but i expect it to be hassle free...she has already covered close to 4K kms after this rebuild.....a short run to six lane proved that she is capable of running fast and strong....well the ride to six lane was along with CCR and she kept up the pace admiring well without any skip in the beat....the engine was not getting heated up at all beyond the normal......
To complement all this and to spruce up handling a bit...i have installed tapered roller bearings, bronze swing arm bushes and bullet shocks at the rear....all this have firmed up the handling with the bike being solid on sweeping curves and an excellent handler.....and she is super flickable now....
The bike was never meant to break speed records...it was intended to be a really fast city bike and am really glad that this journey ends with a happy smile.....thanks to RDD for being there as the guiding lamp...thanks man once again....

Long Journey man.
Toughf calls to make when your pistons are shot and you have only enougf money to either fix the pistons or fix the bottom end and then worry about the pistons.
I guess all RD owners including myself go thru this.
I guess we both learnt a lot thru this journey.
One thing is for sure. You have one of the best bottom end setups arround. The only other bike in the club with that kind of setup is Tom / Motor drag bike.
It sure is a fun bike to ride in Trafic. Any RPM any gear blip it and your flying.
Look after her well and enjoy her man.
Keep an eye on the ring end gap and change your rings at arround 10-15,000 Kms.
If required.

Update RDD Build @11K kms
I was not really intending to write an update for a very long time. But the last weekend kinda changed my perspective and brought out some new aspects of the bike.
There was a small update at 7K basically a checkup of the engine condition reported in the below thread:
http://www.rddreams.com/rddreams/html/i ... ic&t=15595
I changed all gaskets, reed gaskets, bore, head, and silencer gaskets then. This was last Oct and I have covered another 5K after that which is only city running.
So it was time for stretching her legs for a short run last saturday! I was apprehensive. I had the bike setup and running during Nov/Dec 06 and I have not touched anything on the bike for the past year and a half. I dont even remember what needle pos I am running.
The day before I filled her up and usual diet of motul and that was it. I had not changed plugs so i took the tools and some plugs. But she ran terrific, strong and steady without missing a beat.
I had worries about heating in city, but it ran cool on this ride. One major thing i noticed is that there is NO loss of power even after extended periods of WOT. She seemed to be more happy running WOT.
But this is not what amazed me! What amazed me was the mileage she returned for the ride. I had been cribbing about mileage to Ron and running on 240 mains did not help also. All the time he was telling me that this bike should return more mileage and I am riding like a nut. Which is true in city. But this ride was no slow ride as well. I must have been doing consistent 120kmph and above. Many times i would just wind her open to let her rip and then come back to my cruising. So when she did not run into reserve on the way back, I was perplexed(had motul with me to refill). She went into reserve yest, returning me an average of 17.5kmpl. Yes am all ectastic, not because this is a phenomenal figure, am excited because even with hard riding she returned this figure and considering the 240 jets, i dont know what to say. What if I had cruised? she must close in on the 20 fig mark!
What i like most about the build is the reliability, even after months just kick and ride. Proudly powered by RDD.

Congrats Mohit. :-) Its nice to know that after all the trouble you and Ron went through for the rebuild, now she is repaying with rich dividends. And the mileage is surprising as well. :-) So more touring on the cards eh?
