Digital CDI feedback

Post by pvrajan »

Here are my experiences with the new CDI.

I was using shogun CDI, and it took me some time to get a decent coil kit with pulcer to install the Digital CDI, and after that the bike was sitting in my friend's garage for many small parts.

Saturday I have started my RD with the Digital CDI II for the first time.
And these are the things I noticed, even though I have not revved high yet.

Changes made: pulled out the old wiring, CDI, plug caps, and In goes Digital CDI II, new HT coils ( brand courtesy Ron!!! :) ), NGK plug caps, and a clean wiring with grounds at different places.

The immediate difference was the idling speed difference, we had tuned the bike to idle on 1500-1700 on the older CDI, this has come down to around 1000 with out any other changes.

While revving, the engine reaches higher rpm on lower throttle position while compared to the earlier CDI. (I hope this has increased my top end rmp, but being patient to find out)

I am running 2T oil pump, and since this is a new pump, and the engine was opened fully, the oil supply is made to be higher, and it used to smoke like crazy, The smoke level reduced immd with the new CDI

The engine sound changed, and it is VERY VERY crisp at lower rpm, and starts growling as it climbs higher.

We also had jetted the carbs rich with the older CDI, and without making any carb changes, the feeling of richness is reduced with the new CDI.

The bike feels younger, as the throttle responce increased. My immd feeling was of sitting on a jumpy/tourqy spiced up small engined bike like Rx100. Keep in mind that I am on stock reeds, nothing fancy.

After all these, I took the bike to outer ring road to Yelahanga with a pillion, Didn't blast though. kept under 4000

While on the older CDI, and WITH a pillion, the bike used to hold back while on the long sloppy climbs. and it also needed a down shift to move it, and at the same time, it used to give out a small "knocking" sound while trying to accelerate to a climb, as the engine is experiencing stress, THIS HAS DISAPPEARED.!!!!!

now I understand why people say they wants to take the long road home and office :)

Glad you like it mate.
My offer to chk your timing with the OTC stinger still stands.
Reasons for the improvement
1. First true Multi Cylinder CDI (Even Yamaha Screwed up by using a single cap and two leads from a single coil on the RZs.

2. THe ammount of work gone into developing the timing curve. Which boosts mid and runs the engine cooler at higher RPMs. Your engine life has just improved by arround 5000 Kms.

Ill show you some neat mods for the spark plug when you come over. Bring a spare pair of plugs.

I will not miss the chance Ron, will bring her over the week end for the OTC treatment. She deserve it :). God I cant wipe the grin off my face ever since.
She is getting pampered, now its ONLY week end bike, strictly for pleasure.

The HT coil sits very neatly inside, didn't have to make any mods to fix them.

Also, I have covered the CDI with plastic sheet and taped it since the CHIP is open. Hope this wouldn't create any issues like heating etc.

Question: I am using W5BC plugs, and since you have seen the bores, and the authority on the CDI you gave me, pls suggest the specs of the spark plugs I should bring.

Would love a pair of Chinoy Filter and fiber reeds, budget permitting in that order.

Sure Ill keep a pair of Unnis oild and ready for you.
The Mico W5BC are the best plugs for the stock RD.
If your making a trip to the US maybe pickup a NGK BP9HS
But not really required on a stock bike.
If its only a weekend bike go larger on the jets. More gas = more power and she can burn whatever you throw at her.

Fixed Ron's 180 main jets on friday because I was to go for the Kanakpura ride. I was running 165 before that . didn't want to push with out these.

All I did was change the jets, and change the needle position to 3 (middle positiion, It was on bottom most position with 165)

Guess what, I didnt even need to adjust air screws. I think because of the spark strength, the increased amount of fuel is burned fully, with out making any other changes.

After Digi CDI II, new coils & plugs, U tube, Unis and 180 jets, the bike feels like its moving like a proper RD. I cant imagine riding it with out these now. Addicted to changes in power.

Now what, I guess it will have to be performance REEDS :)
