My bike past and present!

Post by derek »

First want to thank Ron for takin out time to do my bike........i was on a very tight budget n he managed to pull out a small wonder on my RD!!hehe
I had sent in my barrels, heads n reeds to ron for a lil work.......earlier bike was running pretty good, power band wud start late around 7k and rev out till 8.5k.........compression earlier was 125 and 127 respectively on left n right barrel.........
Now the compression has been bumped to 167 on the left and 175 on the right!!!
Let me state that in bombay we dont have the best of sleeves.....i was running a shitty half sleeve which was probably less than 1mm thick, messed up sleeved heads and boyeson reeds which were not correctly setup.
Even with such a messed up setup,Ron managed to get the compression up by a huge margin!Am running points, cant afford CDI......:(
Now the power starts as early as 4k and revs till about 8k where she hits a wall......and she moves a lot stronger in this powerband than ever!!
I dont know how the bugger manages to do pull out such terriffic work!
Oh i also forgot to mention that i had shit loads of blowby before i sent them to Ron,it was amazing to see how so much oil, carbon or whatever can accumulate on a piston and barrel.....hehe
Even with all this,he somehow managed to get my bike moving better....she pulls to 7k in 6th gear easy now!
I dont know what he did and i honestly dont care!!Attaboy Ron!!hehe!!
I wud like to mention again that i was on a very tight budget and he did all he cud within this budget with some superb results!
I thanks him fo all his help! One more happy chappy on the list!!:)
Now i have to go n get my jetting right....jettin such a bitch!!Lol
Regards,Derek.

Glad you liked the way it came out. I honestlly wasnt sure if we could get anything outa that ole gal. But the next time we do it right and make one real monster.

Puting down some points here as it may help other Bombay RD owners.

1. Liners:
This has got to be the thinest liner Ive seen in my life. It can not be rebored even once.
And is also as a result very fragile. If your geting a liner make sure to ask how thick its going to be and how many times you can rebore after puting in the liner. Typically liners like ours allow you to go from 64 to 66mm or a total off 7-8 rebores. Min. Liner thickness for safety should be 2mm.

2. Porting.
I was told the ports had been chamfered. In actuall fact. THe exhaust port had been widened by more than 2mm but only in one direction. The Exhaust port had also been raised by quite a bit. Allmost as much as we use on the drag bikes. Hence the poor power band. While all this had been done the Transfers had not been touched or modifed. We matched the transfers to the ex. port and cleaned up the ex. port. Extencive mods where done to the Aux transfers to improve scavenging.

3. Reeds:
Good Boysen reeds had been installed. But the reed cage was stock and not modifed to exploit the Boysen reeds. Hence where performing worse than stock.

4. Blow by.
The Engine had recentlly had a fresh rebore but judging on the ammount of blow by on the piston skirt it was obvious the rings where not sealing. The rings and Pistons where Orignal Yamaha stuff. But due to the lack of a proper hone it looks like the rings never seater or sealed proper. This shows how critical geting your re-bore and hone patern right is.

4. The heads had a very bad helicoil insert. To hide the insert. on the bowl side they had machined the bowl much deeper than stock. If your runing metal inserts in your Cyl. head. Try and dump the heads as soon as possible.

My recomendations where
1. New liner
2. New rings (we could use the old pistons). New rings would seal with new liner and a proper hone job.
3. Digital CDI.
4. New heads.

But budgets are a bumer. Next time we fix the bitch good man.
Till then ride safe.
Ill PM you some sugestions on the jeting and timing. I still think you should try 1.6mm on the timing.
Try the bike with both regular and Hi octane. I think she will need higher octane and will give you good power with IOC 93 Octane.
To vilify a great man is the readiest way in which a little man can himself attain greatness.

Hey nice to hear that. It would be tough for him to work on a tight budget as my bike to was done up on a tight budget. But seems he likes challenges. So there continues the success story

[-X This is supposed to be in a thread all by itself Rash. Either ways, was a witness yesterday to Lepp's 1000 Watt smile while we were testing his RD. *beep* roared past two guys on pulsars doing above 150 kmph and the babes in pillion were shouting "RD...RD..". Wish we had pointed the camera at Lepp's face then. Could have got a very satisfied customer video for the records.
