Got my RD!!

Post by haneesh »

Hi All,
The wait is over and I am living my dream now :)
I bought an RD350. It’s a 1987 LT model registered in Coimbatore (originally registered in Karnataka). I’ve been looking out for an RD for the last 8 months and most of the bikes offered were the crap ones from Manipur/Meghalaya (thanks to RDD for the information on the authenticity of these bikes, else I would’ve bought one of the Manipur registered bikes long back)

I’ve taken the delivery last week and the bike is not perfect, it starves for power when the engine revs between 6k and 8k. I opened the head and as mentioned by the owner, it is running 0.25 size pistons on a sleeved barrel. The right piston is in a bad state and would need a replacement. My mechanic said that the sleeves are good and advised me to go for 0.5 over size pistons or buy a new set of cylinders and standard size pistons. I am not sure if I can get good set of cylinders. I got to know about the Taiwanese cylinders from other posts in the forum but not very confident on installing them. Any inputs on this would be of great help.

The bike is currently running a CDI unit and will soon be replacing it with RDD CDI. Bike is currently in my native town Erode and I know my mechanic from my childhood and he has very good experience in RD350. He is aware of RDD and has installed RDD CDIs in few RDs and RXs in my town.
That’s it for now. The next challenge is to fix the engine and bring it back to stock condition and I am up for this. Apart from this there are few cosmetic fixes like getting RD speedometer and indicators which I am planning to do later.

Happy revving!!
Cheers Haneesh
