1984 RD350, RDD Engine Rebuild.

March 2004, Bought the motorcycle with zero acumen to ride and maintain it. Reason for purchase: - Sound, Speed and “Not everyone owns it” syndrome. Local mechanics took benefit of the mechanical ignorance ( I was witness to splash of oil from the cylinder, spark plug removed and engine running. Hammering of screw drives on the roof of exhaust post to remove carbon deposit and to remove something which previous mechanic has put in there to increase mileage. Shorten the muffler to increase sound & Pick up. All this was done will diagnosing, as to why the left cylinder gives up after running for 15-20 mins). Drove the motorcycle for around 200kms and went for further studies in June 2004.

Got to know about this forum with access to internet in college and signed up in September, 2004.

In 2006, study completed and started working. It got harder to devote time for motorcycle, as I realized it’s can of worms. Moreover, absence of good mechanic was a deterrent as well. None of them brought in the confidence to get the job done. By now I had read fair bit about 2-strokes on the RDD forum.

In July 2009, I made up my mind to get the engine rebuild done from RDD. Contacted Ron Chinoy, he was gracious enough to accept my build without interview. Motorcycle was shipped in Oct 2009.

Fast forward to March 2012, got the news from Mr. Chinoy, job is done and motor cycle has been shipped. It reached on March 20th, worked on the small jobs required to ride it. These small jobs(Rust removal, fuel pipes, Speedo & Tachometer installation, filters, chain installation, sorting out of indicator and tail light assemble(Damaged/Broken in shipping) Premix oil etc took over a month. Yesterday started the motorcycle and took for small ride. I almost forgot how RD sounded; it was sweet recall with evident change in way the motorcycle was running. Did a 3km run, kept her under 3500rpm.

Big Thanks to Ron, giving me this build. He was/is patient to attend and answer the calls and question. Thanks goes out to Prd, Reaper, Ajay, Amrit, Brar and to all those who helped me in one way or the other.
A lot of time and effort has gone into this motorcycle. It’s a keeper for sure! Now It need to plan on the cosmetic restoration of it, which may start somewhere year or so down the line.
Will keep posted on the Break in and post it.
@Ron:- During the short trip last night, did water test. It evaporated instantly and checked the Heads, they were hot.

Driving the bike at or under 3500 RPM is going to cause it to over heat.
First Rags nearly blows it. Then you.
Please drive it as you would drive a regular bike. i.e. Clean pull to 5K + in each gear.
You have effectively stuck it at max advance exactly @ 3500 RPM. Not a good idea.

Ride it like a RD is supposed to be driven. You just dont want to hold high RPM or constant throttle position.
This is not a road side build. Where you have all this run in circus. RDD built engines are just like a modern Jap engine run in. i.e. normal use just dont hold high RPM.

I dont know about your city so lift the needle to fully rich and drive the bike. Do a plug chop. If its rich go down a notch. If its lean ask me for bigger jets.

Bikes are jeted for Bangalore elevation.

Got some spare time today, spend it on much needed cleaning of the motorcycle, as it was quite dirty. It took around 3 hours to clean the engine bay. Haven't ridden the motorcycle after the first run.@Ron:- Will take care of the RPM.



Need to replace the Triple tree bearings and rebuild the rear shock absorbers.

Last week checked the compression, its 150 in both the cylinders. Still in Run-In. Pulls clean, surprisingly refined for a 2 stroke motor,Timing is tad on safer side, and needle position in 2nd from the bottom. Will post some pictures of spark plug after weekend ride.

150 is considerably higher than normal. So it is better to run safer timing.

Tanvir and I took her out for a spin this morning, did a 60ish km run I have to say one thing about the motor damn thing pulls like a tank. I only revved her upto 7000rpm in the lower gears and it totally blew my mind. I am pretty sure with a bit more tune up and timing it'll be an absolute joy to rip. The cdi and the way it is ported they all just gel in so well damn you have to ride it to believe it.

Yes when we do the porting we match up everything the ports are designed to work with the CDI Map.
You have to ride it to understand this.

Don't have the camera like Go-Pro.
Need to fix the fuel leak from Left side engine case, had re-sealed the Neutral Switch but again the oil is dripping.

Lifted the needle to the middle position, it ran considerably hot, again switched to second from bottom, it ran cooler.
Bangalore and Patiala has altitude difference, Bangalore-932m, Patiala-254m. taking this into consideration and humidity on an average-60%, should I upjet?
@Ron What are the mains jet size? I think its either 210 or 220. Pilot stock! Right?

Stock pilots.
Run on richest clip. Bangalore is 3000 Ft. Diff is like CBE / Bangalore huge.
If you want larger jets. Send in the old ones.
If its running fine dont play with it.

Neutral switch covers are in stock let me know if you want one.

Run-In over, have clocked 470 km during run-in. Now have shifted bigger main jets, 220 mains(RDD size) and stock pilots. Wiring sorted and routed, all the electrical functions(Lights, Horn, Pilot lamp, turn indicators) are functioning now.



Sifted to M800+Yamalube.Now have to look into suspension at high speed(front-end) and braking. Power band is addictive and body shaker.
