Re: Looking high and low for some RDD Horrow Stories.
I have a pair of brand new (NOS) stock pipes. But I haven't taken off the RDD chambers ever since I first installed them on my bike almost 4 years ago. That alone should be a review of what I think of the chambers.
Despite having lowered the bike in the front (17" front wheel, fork-tubes raised through the triple-clamps), the bike flips in 1st, hikes the front up in 2nd, and floats it in 3rd. Sanju Sahu called my bike a "mind-*bleep*" when he took it for a short spin, Rohan Bhadgaonkar told me to lose the Harley bar and get proper clipons because this was a racer, Madmax Arjun Raina couldn't stop raving about it either. Sling refused to ride it, LOL. One of Sling's friends, Amey Temghare who is an ex dirt-racer said the bike is "insane". Those looking for a review of the chambers can stop reading here.
But things weren't always this fun.
The issues I had with my bike were with things that were never touched by Ron (the speed wobble, the carburettor cable jugaad). There was a comprehensive feedback thread somewhere but I can't find it now so will post up again with all facts.
Mistake # 1:
Soon after I received my build, I trusted Prakash Shende, Ravi's mechanic, to put it all together for me under my supervision. That was my first mistake. I would MUCH later (almost years later) discover during routine carb-cleaning that because of his fancy jugaad with the carb cable, the throttle-slides weren't going up more than 2/3rd of the total distance. Anyways, this was not imporant during run-in so I didn't notice it at first. I did a 250 odd km. run-in on stock pipes, fat jetting, and Castrol 2t oil. Soon after run-in was over, I and some friends did some speed runs and the bike wouldn't go over 118 kmph. I blamed Ron's porting at the time and even sent the barrels back to him for some more "massaging", but it was only much later that I discovered that the carb-cable jugaad (among other things, but more on that later) was to blame.
Anyway, so when the barrels came back from Ron after the second porting, I decided to put everything back together myself. It was painful and time consuming but I was happy with my work. Sling provided helpful tips over the phone such as "remember to lubricate gaskets before fitting them so that they don't rip when you tighten stuff down". This time there were no oil-leaks either.
Also this time instead of stock pipes, I put the chambers. I had to take off the side-stand and cut off the side-stand mount. Putting the chambers transformed the bike. But it exposed SO many bottlenecks it wasn't even funny. The bike would take off like a rocket at 5500 rpm but even with 330 size mainjets, she would suddenly stone-wall at 7000 rpm. I just HAD to get to the bottom of this. This is when i discovered the carb-jugaad. Fixing it transformed my bike to some extent. Atleast now she was revving freely to 8500 rpm but the train-like pull would stop about 1000 rpm before that. That is when Motorhead (Rohit Koli) suggested that the next bottleneck might be my (stock) reeds. He was kind enough to carry back a pair of the world's best reeds (VF3s) for me, from the US. Installing it was another matter though, because by then Ron and I weren't on good talking terms I disliked the fact that no-one from RDD was able to help out with the wobble problem (i had tried everything, from new spokes, new wheels, new but local-crap swingarm bushes), but more on that later. That's where Arun stepped in. And because Motorhead agreed to personally supervise the installation, I had no qualms about handing my RDD barrels over to a stranger.
When the barrels came back with the huge-ass reeds installed, the transformation was so monumental, it blew me away. I guess you get what you pay for. She is now like an old-school dirt-bike or LT-on-steroids upto 5250 rpm. There is a slight flat-spot there upto 5500 rpm and then you are shot out of a cannon. There are no other words for it. The mind-numbing acceleration goes on right upto 9000+ rpm. The low-end is good enough to allow the bike to enter the powerband from 2000 odd revs, double-seat even in 6th. It has become a game for me and my pillion riders. Get the bike into 6th at around 3000 rpm, and keep the throttle whacked open. She gets to 5500 rpm like any normal stock-piped RD (no clutch-slipping etc. required) and after that, for the next few mind-boggling seconds it is like going to hell on a one-way ticket The combined weight of rider and pillion matters zilch. In a straight line, no other bike I own, is so much fun. Not even the Husky. This is not some half-arsed claim. People living in or willing to travel to Pune can ride my bike and verify it for themselves. Of course if you crash it, you buy it.
Mistake # 2:
My second mistake was that i was looking in all the wrong places to resolve the wobble issue. Finally help came in the form of Teji who insisted that the culprit was most definitely the swingarm bushes. He ordered some fancy ones for me and I got them back when I traveled to the US for the third time. Took the swingarm off and got the bronze shit installed at the hydraulic press shop of a friend, and NO MORE WOBBLES!! A monthly visit to the local grease-gun operator is all it takes now to keep her rock-steady at 150 plus. Oh that reminds me, I did an unintentional top-speed run on my way back from Lonavla with Utsav CHS from x-bhp for company. She did 157 before I chickened out and slowed down for traffic.
Would I buy anything from RDD again? Not a chance in hell. Therefore my beloved car shall remain stock and I will hopefully continue to get my 4-wheel kicks driving my best friend's M5. Mohith you missed your chance to see a family saloon that can harass any production Ferrari, when you slinked in and out of Pune within 3 days without informing anyone
As to getting back to why I wouldn't buy anything from Ron again, well, getting anything out of Ron is like a labor of love. It is too painful. You have to pay your money up front, and wait for months before stuff turns up. AND things don't turn out well if you get even the routine stuff installed by a "reputed" RD mech (even one who has worked for Escorts for 25 years) I am not sure I would want to go through all that again. Also he's too cagey with a lot of stuff; like the time he refused to help me with the carb-cable spacers just because I didn't buy the carbs from him (I didn't know at the time that RDD sold carbs too, LOL) or the wobble, really pissed me off LOL.
And it's a very confusing duality because in person, he is one of the most hospitable and approachable human beings I know. I have stayed over at his place a coupla times and even very recently when I went to pick up the Husky from Bangalore, meeting him was like meeting an old friend who you started avoiding after you discovered he works for the KGB I also did not like how he handled the entire Ravikiran issue. I still use his favorite line "You have two options. The first is fuhk off." with people who piss me off
And just for the record, I shall forever be indebted to Adrian for having sold me the chambers. One of the "stock RDs are best" clowns here who laughed at me for getting second-hand pipes for 15k and spending more money just to fly to Bangalore and get them back, offered me twice as much money for them after one ride on my bike.
And even Ron won't know whether to laugh or cry when he finds out who's offered to pay me 55k for the chambers alone won't take any names here though. Madmax Arjun knows who it is and I would request him to only tell Ron, not anyone else. LOL let's just say it's a funny world and leave it at that.

Low life LOL, look at ur language man, well, very unbecoming of you, but then again from my side I will pass posting shit.
As for Lies and Karma, prolly, think about this one point, why does your own one time customers end up pissing all over you, if that aint karma, I dont know what is, good luck with the rest of ur lies and double speak, ur a joke.
Well Danny, from your perspective, your only hearing "ONE PART OF THE GOOD STORY", but for you and everyone concerned, I have mine, and it was one of getting shafted left right and centre and that is the truth from my end, this guy can run me down for all its worth, cause this is his backyard, that's what he is good at when he cant own up responsibility for his products worth jack shit.
As for the bike, its Black now, running Arts and just finished around 25K with a 3K round trip around kerala.

Re: Looking high and low for some RDD Horrow Stories.
thanks Vivek. Very kind of you to chip in.
I think everybody knows the quality of our work and chambers. But its always nice to hear it from the end user.
I think its pretty obvious to anybody reading this thread whats going on. And Im not going to feed the Troll anymore.
Really dont have any time to waste on this. Cause this issue is close to a decade old now. ANd I look upon every experience as a learning one.
This one taught me a lot. People wonder why Im so picky about my customers now you know.

Re: Looking high and low for some RDD Horrow Stories.
OK... so essentially we have one customer who blames Ron's chambers for blowing up his barrels and he sold the chamber to another customer who is blowing his load each time the chambers hit the powerband. Then the first customer tried to buy back the chambers when he saw what they could do. And this same guy also blew an array of RDD CDIs which are running fine everywhere else and he is pissed that nobody accepted blame for what'd happened.
Now the second customer is also angry because his barrels were ported by RDD and no help was offered because his bike was wobbling due to faulty swingarm bushes and his clueless mechanic installed a dodgy throttle cable and nobody showed him love when he asked for a keyboard diagnosis in an open forum.
And everybody agrees that Ron is a nasty old man who needs to eat more prunes.
You couldn't make this shit up!
Give it up and get back to work, old man. We got plenty of work to do.

Lmfao, buy back chamber lol, thats some serious imagination prd, blew an array of CDI's lol, if you say so :-).
As the owner here says, decade old, personally feedback asked, feedback given, not accepted, so be it.

Prd, I did not say anywhere that Leppard wanted the chambers back.

Yes i was in pune for good 6 month and me & vivek met often. i did have a chance to ride this bike at lot of times.. once I remember i had it for a weekend for the HID installation. so the first time somewhat comfortable with what she could do.. i took my clueless roomie for a ride. I used to put up very close to the highway so the pune -belgaum highway was the choice.
i hit the band in the 3rd gear hard..the front lightens and lifts off a couple of inches, i shift into 4th & still the wheel is an inch up in the air. even while i shifted into 5 th ,i still felt the front end was on the lighter side....with crazy watering eyes and a shitless pillion i backed off , stopped for a smoke..i felt weak i my knees & felt like a little kid again..
this has to be the craziest RD i have ever ridden till date .....
Those Chambers are a piece of art..but there is more to it .... it is the SETUP...the carbs were jetted perfectly , the ignition was timed perfectly . So this somewhat brought me to the conclusion that unless the customer himself takes these pain shaking efforts of months & months of effort , things would never turn out so well.....its not about Ron or any other tuner or not just confined to motorcycles & cars..its just general life .. their is never a fixed magical solution to anything. you have to and have be involved & make efforts .

Re: Looking high and low for some RDD Horrow Stories.
I have a good "lesson learned" story. It does not involve any bad products or bad engineering, only what NOT to do. I picked up a 100% restored cafe RD400 that has the latest model complete Chinoy system. The guy I bought the bike from did not install it, the owner previous to him installed the system.
The bike was roughly 80% complete and it only took me a few weeks to get it to the point where it could be started for the first time. The bike just would not start, on kick-over it would pop and throw flames out of the exhaust. Immediately I suspected timing. After pulling the left side covers off and pulling the rotor off, I found the stator plate had been installed with the ignition unit up at the top at 12 O'clock. So it was roughly 180 out.
I flipped the stator over with the ignition down at the bottom where it belongs and it fired right up first kick and ran beautifully.
Once that was done I commenced with jetting. I chased my tail with jetting for almost 3 weeks, trying to get the surges and odd rough spots out of the middle/top end. nothing seemed to work and I was going to try a different pair of carbs. Then I read someone's post about the "option" plugs and I thought I'd take a look at them. They were BOTH plugged in. Imagine what that would do. Well as soon as I unplugged them the bike ran just excellent and all the surging and rough spots were gone. Now I could finish jetting.
The last bit of trouble showed up when I began regularly riding the bike up to the coffee shop to show it off. A few times the bike just quit, completely out of nowhere. It would start right up and continue once I kicked it over. This began to happen more and more, it was more embarassing than anything. It would quit just like I had turned off the keyswitch. The bike was not set up with a kill switch. So I started looking for obvious things and I found that the bare male KILL connector was hanging down in a place where it could touch the bike's main ground. So the kill feature was being intermittently activated. I installed a piece of insulator tubing over that bare connector and tie-wrapped it up into place where it wont be touching anything.
It has taken a few months to get this RD finished and running right, and now its a really fun bike to ride.

Re: Looking high and low for some RDD Horrow Stories.
Thanks for the kind words guys. And support.
Lets just say over the years I have learned the hard way, what kind of people to work with and what kind to avoid.
Now-days I can spot a *bleep* from a mile away.
And Im glad that most of the guys that are still with RDD are way way smarter than those against us.
