My RD and experiance with RDD.
My RD and experiance with RDD.
Bought this RD in 2008 June end with the help of unseen RDD friend in my native and started with restoration, procured essential parts which i felt is required that time along with RDD CDi and filters.
Till last year i was in impression that my bike is 0.5 mm over size but when Ron saw it and cleaned a bot of cylinder liners it came out to be half sleeved that too with damaged ports and from here my low time started as i never wanted to run sleeved RD, hunt started for unsleeved bores and came across some china barrels which was sold to me saying its original HT barrels, took it to Ron and his experienced eyes immediately told me its scam and these barrels doesn't have spec of either US or HT or LT all ports are out and sleeve is twisted.
Again i went in deep and felt like people wants to make money out of our passion but Ron told me the best way to come out of this will take this as challenge and will show the world that RDD can do magic in any kind of product.First we thrown the pistons and Ron started studying this barrel and best possible way to get the best out of this, he spent hell lot of time in cleaning the ports and making the flow as much smooth as he can and ultimately the barrel came out with ART piston and properly done up ports.
Got the gear box and crank fixed at Ron's place and one fine day Ron called and told me to pickup my engine.
Got the engine installed without RDD goodies as my mechanic was afraid to touch the CDi, so bike was running on scooty pep cdi and took her for 125 km ride on very first day, even though she was in run in period i felt like bike is not kicking in as it should kick, reason was sure due to scooty cdi and no proper jetting, any how first week passed and 2nd week Ron was busy so didnt touched the bike at all, today confirmed with Ron and went to get the CDi and filters done, after completing the installation while fixing the jets Ron realized that my rusted tank is supply enough amount of sand paper inside carbs and engine to put me for down for another rebuild in another 3-400 kms.
We just cleaned the carbs and installed local fuel filter as temporary solution to avoid rust getting in engine.Fixed everything and fired the engine and what a change earlier beats were not properly engine RPM was not stable and she use to cry to touch even 4000 RMP and after that its dead lock use to feels like restricted to not to cross 4K RPM.
Ron took me for a short spin and bike started roaring whole high street filled up with RD roar, bike was pulling so well that it was tough for me to sit with Ron as rear grab bar is not there anyhow manage to come back safely LOL, after that i took alone for a spin this time it was even faster and bike simply becomes a rocket after crossing 3500 RPM, went to basement with big smile on my face which was obvious as after so many years of wait the real thing came in, thanks to Ron for making my dream come true along with providing such a wonderful RDD products.
P.S this is not an ultimate RDD RD its just got Ron's magical hands on cylinders,RDD head mode, RDD CDi, Chinoy filters, RDD carnk, reeds are stock, carbs are stock with biggest jet ever any RD have seen Ron need your comments on Jet size and our local RD parts dealers standard.Bike is pulling well and at present fuel flow and front breaks and tyres are the weakest point which i am going to sort out in coming weekends.Need to install rear career, saree guard(no no neither my wife nor my GF's wear saree), front mask, left hand side mirror, auto lube, disc break at front wheel.
Message for stock fanatics and people running some CDi's, either be happy with your points or CDi and its maintenance and limited bandwidth(RPM range), hotter engine or just leave all this pain to RDD CDi and enjoy the full juice of your engines capacity that too without giving her any strain.I am very much satisfied with RDD products and sure going to enjoy my bike for years and years.
Few pics with its future owner, Ron i am not taking this bike with me till my graveyard its going to be taken care by this little rider after me.
Best part is Ron also told me that bike came out well not sure cosmetically or performance wise
Thanks to whole RDD for forming this wonderful community.

Thanks for the kind words babba.
Enjoy the bike. Show me the plugs or send some pics after you have done about 100 Km on thise setup.
Keep doing the water test.
And do not take sustained long blasts till you measure your fuel flow.
You scam with the first victim of the China Barrels was much drama. What I didnt like was the complete manner in which the deal was done.
Where was the need to lie and say they are NOS Indian HT barrels when they are not. Its funny how all the chamchas and pimps go into hiding when a scam is exposed and then re-surface in a few weeks like nothing has happened.
Glad we got them to work and work to your satisfaction.
We can always add more power when you get bored with this setup.
Just add some rubber dampers for the cylinders and heads.
I think the reason your bike was not reving past 4000 is because your timing was super advanced.
Your Mech has done a great job with the cycle parts. Bike looks nice. And now its going to move nice too.
Its got that raw angry sound once it gets in the band.
The transformation was amazing. The minute the engine started you could feel the difference.
When I heard the bike at the RDD Meet I told you not to ride it till you get it tuned. Glad you listened to me. It saved your engine.

Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
Your on a RDD Jet number 280
We normally run a RDD Jet 240 on a stock HT.
So your a shade on the safe side. But I would still chk the plugs asap and make sure they are not bone white.
It feels like a Hybrid between a HT and a US spec.
i.e. power band starts same as HT but it pulls to higher RPM than a US Spec.
If its really good install a security system. Cause other wise they will steal it.
Everybody and his uncle want to know how to make these barrels work.

Morning sure will do some rides with water test and plug chop, will post the pics.
The first performance China barrel , Ron as i told you many parts dealers are willing to know how to make these barrels run as RD should be. Hope these barrels wont become hit saying HT & US spec combo.
Bike secured by 3 security guards 24x7 bribed for allowing my unwanted vehicles(by society) in basement.

Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
well mate the simple truth is there is no easy fix. As you saw for your self it takes hours and hours of back breaking work to make them work.
If you run them as is. Or without a RDD CDI you know how its going to perform lol.
Thanks to the rust treatment of 125 Km. I dont think you need to bother with run in any more.
You should do one tank full with clean gas. Please run the highest octane you can afford. I like and recommend IOC premium.
After that you should start adding motul to the mix. At least 5ml to the LTR at most 30 ML. If using 5ml then you will need to run some cheap 2t oil. with the 5ml of motul.

Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
what do you plan to do about the rust in the tank?
Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
He says they have a way of elector plating the insides without touching the paint in his Native.
I would have gone with POR10 or Kareem or any of the other coating products you have.
Check out the Royal Enfield USA site they have some good info as the bullet tanks also suffer from this problem.
Even the new ones it seems. (Or is it the paint flaking inside the tank and then rusting).

Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
Ok. Ron, whats your take on the Yamaha tank treatment kit? Is it worth it?
Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
Yamaha tank treatment is not available now and importing the famous Kreem is not legal they are refusing to export any liquid item.
Going to do traditional way of cleaning for the time being of putting small steel balls with 2T oil and shake along with some rubbing with cotton cloth with 2T oil.

Ajay Kareem is considered a crap product.
Sorry I recomended its name.
Please research what work and what dont.
Por10 is better than kareem.

Congrats Ajay! She's a real looker! Good to see that there is new management waiting to take over the RD soon.
Mate, I hope you don't mind, just one thing I'd like to emphasize, please get that tap ported before you give her a proper run. I have seen more than a few bikes wreck themselves that way.
But all that apart, time now to enjoy the fruits of labor and update that signature of yours... If you need any help feel free to let me know, I live around the corner from you.

Thanks Ron for suggestion before buying the product, let me clean the tank on myself and later on I'll get her a nickel treatment at native.
Thanks Pradeep and yes i am not going to rip her till the fuel flow issue gets sorted out, knows very well the things happen to Muks bike.Waited so much so i can wait for some more time to get the full potential of this bike with proper and clean fueling.

Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
Hey Ajay,
Congrats on getting your bike to run well. Hope you have a great time on this dream bike which took a lot of love and pain to get on to the roads.
About the rust you mention, it brings to mind a small experience I have had with old petrol containers. One of my friends had a old 1950s-60s jeep petrol can. One of those drunk nights at his place, talk veered to trips in the jeeps and i mentioned how petrol cans these days were mainly plastic and how many times these petrol cans get punctured by sharp objects etc. He suddenly said hang on i can fix that for you and got me a very very old petrol can from his grandfather's jeep. This was a metal can faded green in colour. Filled in some 5 liters of kerosene and left it for a while, then shook the can with a lot of nuts, bolts and metal washers. After that, another wash with some 2 liters of kerosene and it is fit as it used to be.
Just yesterday night, took the can out and filled her up with 20 liters of petrol and she is still holding it great. Hope this helps you
Cheers

Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
Hey Vijay,
What is your opinion on the rust's contribution to the performance of our motorcycles ?
I myself found it hard to believe that there was no rust in the can after the first clean up with nuts bolts and kerosene. Thus I had it refilled the can with kerosene and left it for a few days. Used to shake the can about whenever I set my eyes on it. After sometime, I poured out the kerosene and out came a clear liquid devoid of any rust. That is when I concluded that the rust from a 40+ year old can be removed !!!
Cheers

Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
Only rust on my motorcycle is the rusty rider's rusty driving skills - Am paranoid about rust after Prd and I found out a layer in the tank - Ron had already warned me about this- so i did a pressure wash and cleaned with Petrol to remove all the particles - still Prd and I are having discussions on tank alternatives

Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
the reason Anand sold the bike was because his engine wore out in short order due to the rust.
This was my first and hopefully last exp. with rust.
There was also the case of Navs RX which he said he could get to run. So he sent it to Bangalore and when I turned the tap on only rust slush came out.
We invest a lot into our bikes. Its sad to loose it all to something as silly as rust.
The best insurance against rust. Are those old glass bottle filters which come with a strainer and magnet.
Used em on my Jawa back in collage.
They also flow 10 times better than the tiny TVS 50 filters most guys run.
Ajay your bike is a monster. for most stock RDs the stock tape is more than enough but for most RDD builds when you get into the power band she can drink some serious gas. This is why RDD built motors need high flow taps.
I have come up with a cheap solution for India. Get one RXZ tap give it to me and I can double its flow for Rs 950/-
Then hook it up with a Brass Y tube and your set.
With most guys running 145 mains and 165 mains they dont have issues.
But most RDD builds run 250-450 main jets. These bikes need a decent tap.
Next time I see a bike with the OE tap Im going to check what they flow.
Your target needs to be 500ml per minute from both outlets combined at the very least.
Some setups like monster-2 flow 2-3 Lts per minute.
Ps: Ajay now you understand why I laugh and smile every time a hear rd which isn't running my CDI
You guys have no idea how much fun it is for me. To hear another RD on points or a crappy Ign.

Re: My RD and experiance with RDD.
Congrats man..finally the beast is out. Enjoy it to the full.
Meanwhile, I had got my RD's tank anti-rust treated in Indore for Rs300 in 2006. The guy used some kind of thick white colour liquid which was poured in the tank and then spread around evenly. It took around 6 hours to dry. It is still holding on well and was thinking to go in for another coat of the same. I guess some members had also seen the same on my bike, when it was in BLR.
