Welcome aboard.

Do you still have the RD?

And is the TBTS a 350 or 500? How's it running? How would you compare it to the old TB?

P.S. We're all closet bulleteers on this forum. ;)

Hi Satyajit, Vivek,
Thanks for the welcome.

Yes, I still have my RD. But it is not in working condition now. Around 5-6 years back, when thought my biking days were over (osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder), I had given the RD to a friend on condition that he keep it running. He ran it, but didn't keep it running, if you get what I mean. Took it back last year.

The TBTS is a 350. I don't think there is a 500 TBTS. It was an impulse buy, end March. So far 330 Km on the clock. Still running on its first tankful. First service not yet done. (Incidentally, the RD has ~14000 on the clock)

No experience with the old TB, so can't compare.

Now, here is the strange thing. Though I consider myself a competent rider, rather than a hotshot one, I pride myself on making myself at home on anything on wheels Rajdoot 175 to Bulls, M800 to 1613s. Surprisingly (well at least to my surprise), I am uncomfortable on the TBTS. Lets see how this plays out.

I think that might have to do with the seating position and handle bar height. I've come across a few older gents (no offense) who aren't very comfortable on a T-bird. And the un-forgiving suspension certainly doesn't help. :)

In my opinion, the regular bullet (machismo/electra/std) has a much nicer seating position.

Hi satyajit,
I think the problem is more to do with my height (or lack of it:- 5' 6''), rather than my age. And either I'm getting slightly used to it, or the bike feels better with less fuel!

I'll try and setup the seating position etc during first service.

I'm trying to get hold of a standard bullet to run an a/b comparison test. Passing years might have dimmed and romanticized memories.

And thanks for your continued interest.

Keep it up and your bike will end up making less power than a tvs xl50. Then you can sit on your RD and go vroom-vroom like that crazy frog.

Hi Chinoy
Thanks for the welcome.

My RD needs a rebuild. Before that, need to bring myself upto speed. Which is the appropiate forum for that. Is there a "rebuilding your RD350" 101 somewhere.

Hi

Agreed! And was going through RD and Yamaha Twins forums (esp. Chinoy's posts). But was wondering whether there was
a) a "distilled wisdom of the group" section (on what to do and why)
b) Where to obtain spares from, (this seems to be actively avoided, understandably)
c) Who to trust to do the job in your city (same comments as b above)

Lots of technical questions, to which I am/ was hoping to find the answers without having to specifically ask. Didn't want to suddenly barge in asking lots of questions. Eg. lets take the case of ignition. For starters :-

a) Can we get original points, and other components, anymore. If so from where, and at what cost?
b) What is the "wasted spark" in a 2stroke?
c) Is RDDs ignition system a bolt-on, or does it prevent reverting back to a stock setup (No, I don't mean on the road, but rather before special occasions)

etc. etc.

As I said, my reasons for joining were selfish!

origianl ignition components would be a wast e of time and money, but if you're desperate, you can try hvccycles.com,economycycle.com and ebay.
wasted spark:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasted_spark
with wasted spark off,the capacitors store the extra charge and then fire a bigger spark.
The ignition system is pretty much bolt on and doesn't require an IQ of over 120 to install. For reverting to stock setup(which defies logic) it can be uninstalled in about 30 mins after the case cover has been removed.

The distilled wisdom of the Group is to be found in the feedback section. If there was another route or another way. These guys have tried it before getting it sorted by RDD.

b) Where to obtain spares from, (this seems to be actively avoided, understandably)
> There are no shops selling Original RD spares. What ever you get in the market. Is basically Export Rejects i.e. Parts are made for Export. What is junked and rejected by the importers is dumped on the Indian Market. We call these the Delhi Parts. Some are ok for use i.e. 1 in 10 Gaskets. Some non critical oil seals. Control Cables. Some rubber parts, Some Electrical parts etc.
For everything else you have to Import from the US.

All the original spares are now in the hands of Private collectors. Nearly every serious member you see here will be having a few Lakhs of OE spares.

Prices are you pay what its worth to you. So indicators go for 10K. Points for 5K. Nobody cares. What you paid. If you have the cash everything is avalible. Natrually we dont want to turn this place into a fish market so we dont allow sale of pimping of parts. Another reason is RDDs reputation. And the fact that we also sell parts. The revenue from our sales support this forum.

c) Who to trust to do the job in your city (same comments as b above)
> We only recommend that you learn to do the work your self. We do not recommend any garage or work shop.

No you cant. The cams on sale now are fake shit.
The points on sale now are fake dachi shit. You may as well sell your bike than run this crap.
The problem is with Dwell. These parts are unable to provide adequate dwell past 5000 RPM.
Importing from the US is not an option because thier ignitions where very diffirent to ours.

b) What is the "wasted spark" in a 2stroke?
There are various types of wasted spark. Smart and dumb. Not all wasted spark systems do double charging. Basiclly instead of firing at TDC and BDC like what is normally done. We only fire once at TDC.

c) Is RDDs ignition system a bolt-on, or does it prevent reverting back to a stock setup (No, I don't mean on the road, but rather before special occasions)
Yes you can revert to stock in 30 minutes. Timing it again may take a little more time.

etc. etc.

As I said, my reasons for joining were selfish!

I think the most important thing is to understand that if you want anything done by RDD or from RDD. There are loooong queues and waiting lists. A RDD build is a life long dream for most people They do not fix a price or a timeliness to it.

Im working on some ideas to sort this out. One of which is just increase my rates so there are fewer customers.

Hi Chinoy
Thanks for your reply. Comments inline posted. Shift to whichever forum you think appropiate.

OK

b) Where to obtain spares from, (this seems to be actively avoided, understandably)

Understood. Exported by manufacturers in India? In which case why cant we get the parts which meet quality requirements. Should essentially mean a matter of paying the importers price.

All the original spares are now in the hands of Private collectors. Nearly every serious member you see here will be having a few Lakhs of OE spares.

Prices are you pay what its worth to you. So indicators go for 10K. Points for 5K.

Maybe I'll sell off the indicators to part finance the restoration! All 4 there.

c) Who to trust to do the job in your city (same comments as b above)
> We only recommend that you learn to do the work your self. We do not recommend any garage or work shop.

I am more than happy to do any job myself, (except for the time factor). However, I do realise that for the RD, do it right first time, or regret later. Would rather I didn't learn on my own bike. Also, my bike has really not been touched. It has been neglected, but not "misrepaired". I would not like to be the person who did that.
Maybe you should hold classes for people like me.
Also, word has got around (in Calcutta) that my bike has not been used much, and is thus a likely source of spares. Quite a few have come wanting to buy it (at junk prices) Result:- I can't trust anyone here.

No you cant. The cams on sale now are fake shit.
The points on sale now are fake dachi shit. You may as well sell your bike than run this crap.
The problem is with Dwell. These parts are unable to provide adequate dwell past 5000 RPM.

Do you mean the points start floating? If so, is it because of a) the profile of the cam, or b) the mass of the points, or c) the spring constant? Or have I got it all wrong?

b) What is the "wasted spark" in a 2stroke?
There are various types of wasted spark. Smart and dumb. Not all wasted spark systems do double charging. Basiclly instead of firing at TDC and BDC like what is normally done. We only fire once at TDC.
Now I am thoroughly confused. Bear with me and correct me if/ where I am wrong.
The RD used to have two entirely separate Kettering ignition systems, timed by a single lobe cam on the crank, with points phased 180 apart. This will give one pulse per revolution for each half. Which is what a 2 stroke needs. No wasted spark.
The only thing which comes to my mind is that the modern CDI's use only one sensor, but are being triggered by a cam with two lobes 180 apart. Am I right?

c) Is RDDs ignition system a bolt-on, or does it prevent reverting back to a stock setup (No, I don't mean on the road, but rather before special occasions)
Yes you can revert to stock in 30 minutes. Timing it again may take a little more time.

If I can get the RD restored, then I would like to take it back to what really was its original condition. I know this means irrationalities like the LT setup, the points, the drum brakes etc. To really use the bike, I would run disks, and cdi etc, but would retain the option of reverting to the original.

I think the most important thing is to understand that if you want anything done by RDD or from RDD. There are loooong queues and waiting lists. A RDD build is a life long dream for most people They do not fix a price or a timeliness to it.
Understood, but are there any ballpark figures (give or take 100%).

Im working on some ideas to sort this out. One of which is just increase my rates so there are fewer customers.

Do what most of us do then.Buy a parts off another bike, bolt on,have some fun while th original stock parts are locked in hibernation.I still have my front end somewhere, but I wouldn't want to use it for fear of bending the shock tubes.

Or buy a junked bike, have fun (and relive frustrations) learn to repair it (like surgeons first practising on cadavers) AND THEN start restoring my RD.

So now to get my hands on junk piece at junk prices!

Hi Sutrpita,

If your RD engine has NEVER been opened, then really dont bother trying to rebuild it on your own. I would suggest talk to Ron(Chinoy) and get it done from him. Your RD engine if yet untouched will have most parts in it worth their weight in gold.

Seriously Get in line for a RDD setup.
