Baleno - RDD Street Setup

Well just thought Id pen some stuff on the problems we had with the build.
First was that even after getting the Baleno workshop manual. We where not able to find a wiring diagram. Not even maruti workshops where able to help us with this.
So after 3 months I thought WTF this is never going to get done. Screw them all. I poped the hood and came up with my own wiring diagram by literally crawling under the car and taping each sensor / injector and selunoid and tracking it back to the ECU harness. It was back breaking work but the only way to proceed. After this I can safelly say if you cant find the wiring digram never mind screw it we can still figure it out.
The second Problem was after hooking up everything the Engine Check light would come on. There where two routes I could have taken here one was just tell the owner that its something you have to live with or 2 sort it out. We took option two. This took an additional two days and quite a few trips to JC road. In a way Im happy I sorted it out wont explain why. (No there is no limp mode if you dont do it). But power is a wee bit down.
Now onto Mohits post above we did som data loging. From what I can tell looking at the logs is everything is where I want it. For max power.
And now you know why I put that switch in there. Cause when your making such insane power that the car starts hoping and torque stearing. Well what do you expect. If the switch was not there then it would be hell for me as the tuner. Now I can just say run the Mileage mode if you mileage or power mode if you want power.
We have opted to leave the mileage mode as is because my gut feeling is that just as the power mode has impresed the mileage mode is going to blow everybody away. It took a lot of time to get the mileage mode dialed in and I dont want to tamper with it. Have asked the owner to report back to me with what the mileage mode is giving. We can then change it.
Finally I will give it stock and power mode. But after we get the mileage figures.
The one thing I love about this build is that once you strap in you dont even have time to ask "Can you feel the power" Its strap up shut up and get ready to experiences some serious Gs.
If you asked me which is more fun a Turbo or this setup for street use Id say this setup will trash the shit outa a turbo.
Simplly because you tap the accelrator and the wheels will break free. vs a Turbo which will suffer from lag and take time to build boost.
Im thinking of piting it agains my Turbo Esteem just to prove the point.

well frankly its the turbo lag and then boost which is most fun.everytime you wait for it very excitedly and then bang it happens.you know small power bands are the fun and exciting part.
kind of like take off is the most exciting part in an airplane ride.lol.
and like acceleration is more fun in a superbike than riding it constantly at even 250 kph.
for example,have you driven a verna deisel.man its got an amazing ride.its crappy in the start and then you hit 1800 rpm and all hell breaks loose.
and the best part is puttering in 2nd gear in traffic.the rpm is around 1600-1700.and by mistake suddenly you nudge the accelerator thinking of a slow crappy linear power delivery and bang the thing closes in on the rear of the other car so fast there is hardly any time to brake.
my friend has busted 3 rear bumpers of different car because of it and he still loves it.lol.
but i have to agree on one thing.that NA is the best for track use and for daily driving.turbo's are hassles.but a lot of fun.

Ive personally built and own one of the first Turbo cars in India which is my dailly ride. So you dont have to sell me on the idea.

I'd pick useable power over an all-out set-up for street. Its so much more easy and pleasing. A peaky set-up is only fun for a weekend blast, for a daily drive its pissing off.
Hatts to Ron for building such a superb set-up and congrats to Mohith for owning this beast. Being a Baleno fan, I simply love this stuff. keep up the good work.

We are continuing our Journey with the engine getting one more little upgrade this month.
Beyond the point of saying what is being done. That is pointless. The only thing that matters is how the customer likes it and how it actually moves.

Thanks Joel, I completely agree with you on that fun part.
Can wait to get the car to you. However I am stuck with some work on the Zen. Will finish that this week and probably bring over the car weekend. I need to buy new tyres also.

After looking at your build, I'm forcing myself to grab a Baleno. Heart says baleno, but mind says buy a diesel motor car. I'm also regretting over selling my Zen now.
Great going guys. The next drag, I want to see your Baleno smoke the VeeTecs. I'm bugged listening to inflated bhp figures from cars which barely do 16secs.
Let others know what a real car can do. Surprisingly there were hardly any balenos during the hyd drag, only Vtecs. Its time the baleno got some fame
@Ron - I've heard there are AWD kits available for the Baleno, how hard is it to source one and transplant? Should solve all the traction problems and offer greater fun.

Anything is possible.
But remeber our working budget was less than most people spend on a RD rebuild these days.
This is not really a drag build its a fun street setup.

Thanks for the upgrades, damn it took most of the weekend.We are continuing our Journey with the engine getting one more little upgrade this month.
More refined power delivery and more Low end torque is what I felt initially. Now I think its more evident in the mileage mode. I am so happy with it that I am mostly driving in the mileage mode nowadays. I think the power mode has lost a little of the raw and viscous nature and is much more refined. More smooth and streetable.
I need to put up some pics, will do so as soon as I get off my lazy ass.

Another observation is that engine temps are slightly up. Not by much but barely noticeable on the guage.

Hmmm.. my understanding is.. and I may be wrong here.. but.. the gauge isnt a very good measure of engine temps. The way they are calibrated is that they show a wide reading when the temps are really cold.. (any ambient temp) and they have a wide reading if they go really high.. (over heating issues) but.. they by and large stay in the middle section for a pretty large temperature range in the middle. So if your emg temp is up or down 5-10degC you would really see any change in the gauge..crazydiablo wrote:Another observation is that engine temps are slightly up. So unless you're using a thermal probe like the one kaushik ahs you really cant detect small variations.

^ The higher heat was due to a falty radiator cap and mixed up fuses in the fuse box. This has been resolved long time back.
I am right now in Kerala, after a fantastic drive through munnar. The car was a blast on the hills of Munnar. It was like power mode all the way in the hills and fluck the mileage.
Left bangalore at around 4 in the morning and reached Munnar around 12.30pm.
The latest additions to the car has really worked its magic man. I dont think I will go back to anything other than this setup. I have not reported mileage after this latest mods, its around 11.5kmpl with A/C on and around 120-130kmph on the highways. Its a mix of mostly power mode and some mileage mode. Another reason for lesser mileage could be the grippy tyres, an not sure.
Ron, probably we have to remap the mileage mode. I think the power mode will give better mileage on the highway under full blast! I want to discuss this further when I get back.
Few words about the Konis. Absolute madness, these will take anything that you throw at them. Did some silly stuff with them and for the first time I feel that these are beyond my driving abilities. The way they stick to the road on undulations, up and down, twisties is mindblowing. Mid way corrections, reducing radius corners you name it this will eat it for breakfast! Love them......
Tyres are nice. I am confused about these because I lost one before I left bangalore to a side wall cut. But these took all the terrain. Sticks like leeches on dry tarmac.....not so happy with wet or moist roads. They will start sliding but very controlled slide, just control with throttle. On dry twisties very difficult to make them squeal, if so its temporary and they regain composure very fast.
Brakes or rather brake pads! These lock up even Neovas! You need a very firm and modulating pressure on the brake. Be very careful with these pads. I wouldnt recommend them for normal use. I belive these will be perfect on the track but for roads little dicey. or probably overkill. So I jab hard, tyres chirp and then I modlulate from then on. I dont know if I will buy another pair.

Now you know why I told you not to be belive the "Famous" Tuners that where running down Koni's right ?
Its all about which mod will get me the best margin. Not about which product will work the best.
The last mod (CI) windup. Was done using CFD. It will give you better intake velocity. Your probably feeling it. ANd it will also modify the fuel maps a bit i.e. you may need to go a little richer in the mileage mode.

Yeah now I understand why you say this is the ultimate street setup.
Total around 9000kms over after we started our mods. From bangalore till now it was only 800kms trip but I should be covering another 1500kms before I reach back home. So that should make it cross 10K mark.
I firmly believe that Konis would be the best street setup. After 800kms I did not feel that its uncomfortable or anything. I am running the softest setting with stock springs and have no intention of changing anything.
After the CAI mod what I felt was the LET was much better. The funny thing is that in power mode you can climb pretty much any ghats in 3rd gear alone. So most of the time I would be using 3rd and 4th gear for the hills and an occasional second for the tight hairpins.

I dont want to see what happend to the RD prices happen to the Baleno Prices.
Right now Balenos are going for peanuts. Once people see what can be "really" done with the engine the prices may syk rocket.

Some of the top Saloon Racing cars in the Country. Will be running the same RDD circuit that is in your car.
