RZ350 YPVS... Designed by Yamaha... Reincarnated by RDD
Well long overdue first ride / pull feedback... so here it comes
After nearly two weeks on the road for various petty reasons I did not really took the bike over 6k. Yesterday I went towards the Gujarat highway hoping to see what the bikes got in store for me
Rode in the 5-6k rpm all the way till the road opened up & then started pulling from 2nd gear onwards. The bike is ultra smooth till 6K and somewhere around 6.5 where the YPVS open it changes itself to a something totally different. At that particular changeover the bike seems like wanting to go under me & then the acceleration is mind blowing. Things tend to move faster than I think... which a personal concern for me is
I have had a decent RD350 which I have taken to 9-9.5 rpm on 6th gear which was fast but this is a totally different business.
It was so fast that a poor crow misjudged my speed and got killed in its flight hitting my radiator... which got the first test ride to stand still as the poor bird was stuck there till the time I did not come stand still. (PHEW I did feel sad for the poor bird)
On the second pull I took it to 9 however had to brake for bad stretch of road (The front brakes have an awesome feel)
In this entire process the bike was rock steady with no sign of age (1989 is the year of import)
Throttle response is the best I have ever experienced; you think 100 it reaches hundred.
Ron, there are no words that can do justice to what you have given me; just to share a some history.. Some two years back I went on a ride with few guys & one of them had a rz350 (from the this forum) and I was pretty impressed by that bike moving; which was the reason I bought a RZ; but now I know that my bike would run circles around it .. I wanted just a nice RZ & you gave me something which is out of this world
Thank you Ron…
Pre-ride changes done:
- Motul 800 Double Ester; changed to premix... man the oil is super cool though currently using 300 ml for 15 ltr which is roughly 2% any changes recommended?
- Removed the baffle from the airbox
Post ride changes to be done:
1Need to do something of the front fork... Need it more stiff it is not handling the acceleration / braking
2.Need to ride more; as I need to get used to it so that I can utilize the potential of the bike.
3.Need to change the sprocket to 17:39 (Current 17:42); this ratio is making it really wheelie friendly especially at YPVS opening... I would feel more confident with the other ratio
Need to get this to the track becasue i need to learn a lot; becasue ron your work needs a skilled rider also..
PS: I wanted this review to really great/ or maybe the best ever written as your work needs much more than; but then my writing skills are not the best..
so if anyone thinks that ROn's talent is ordinary and my engine is the same we can always go for a ride

Damn....seems like one nasty powerband. Ride safe man.At that particular changeover the bike seems like wanting to go under me & then the acceleration is mind blowing.
Think again

I was tripping with what ron gave me on my RX, urs being an RZ, i can just about imagine what it must feel like. Enjoy man.
There is no hope left when you start declutching an RD.

Dam I wish my customers had better writing skills
Just kiding man.
I should be the one thanking you. I allways knew in my heart of hearts that RDD has the tuning skills to be up there with the worlds best.
But knowing something and proving it are two different things. All the tuning skills in the world are naught when you dont have a customer.
So thats where I owe you.
Firstly for the trust. You had in RDD to do a good job
Secondly in your determination to have the best its no joke what you went thru. Riding down south to pick up the bike.
Then riding back to Bangalore to drop the bike off.
And last but not least. Your willing to spend what it took to have the best. Be it a brand new Wiseco crank. The best of everything.
I get to live to my dreams thru my builds. And knowing there is another guy out there. Riping down a road with a healthy two stroke scream peircing thru the air.
Dont worry I will sort out your suspension. Have some experience in converting shocks designed to handle drum brakes switching to super bike twin rotors.
Also I will get your power band to start from under 4500 RPM next time we meet up. Top end will remain the same.
Ive spent at least a few hundred man hours on those barrels so I know what she must feel like.
And yes your right compared to the other RZs in India your bike would run circles around them. Without a doubt.
If your doing some sprockets or geting some down I need a 17th front. The idiot expert RZ tuner who did up my RZ has installed a 15th front sprocket. And it still accelrates like a snail.
Waiting for the star and spring to start restoring it.
If you get the bike down for next track day I can spend some time dialing it on the track. Nothing beats track side dial in.
Just kiding man.

i am fine with the current power band.. it is not like the bike is a pussy below the 6.5.. it has got a punch of a LT..Also I will get your power band to start from under 4500 RPM next time we meet up. Top end will remain the same.
What i really need is a RDD cdi for this..

Yeah the low end should be pretty decent as anybody who has heard the engine being bliped can tell.
I was affraid about the wheelie prone bit.
But moving up on the gearing is the best way to cure that.
And it should give you better top speed.

Well thought that i post some more feedback.. as today i got the felt the worth of every penny i spent & the amzing work Ron has put into the engine & tony it getting the bike on its feet
I am happy & feel successfull that i was pull off this build & the coorodination that happened between both of my friends in this
in the last couple of days i have been riding hard seeing red line whenever i want & never did the bike show any sign of revolt or displeasure.
It goes all the way to the red zone not sure how much guys as when i am riding i really can’t stare the meter unit but today when i was deaccelrating i saw by rpm dropping from 10K & speed dropping from slightly above 110 mph & trust me the bike was smooth as a babies arse with Johnson & johnson on it.. but then i am not up to it as of now.. some other day.
The confidence that the bike inspires is amazing; you know you can outaccelarte anyone & outbreak anything...
Thank You once again Ron !
Now the main thing is getting it on the next track day so that i can learn more of my bike
Changes from last time
- Fork redone for my weight.. it feels crazy
- The brakes have bed in
- Using Motul straight into the oil tank no issues whatsoever
- The engine feels like heaven
- Unnessacary leaks from the silencer & anywhere resolved
- The throttle response from the Carbs is great; but after some riding it pains as the spriongs are very tight. Maybe would change to some other spring (Partly because the handle / riding position is not very comfortable for a tight accel)
- & ya The engine feels like heaven..
Changes planned during the monsoon
- TZR125r Belgarda front fairing with mounting frame; headlight unit, screen etc etc; the current fairing is quite ugly & the screen is not great as we did but a new one as it would have been a waste to put it on a bad fairing
- The tank get to a brand new feul cap set with proper gasket to stop water seeping in
- Repaint the tank & get the fairing painted (Now i have a choice here to change color What about Red & white)
- Small teething issues which i would resolve in sometime

The first RZ I ever ported in my life
Not bad eh?
Wish our foregin members could see it fly.
It would make them realize the quality of porting we can do in India.
