RONs the man

Post by coolhead »

here's a little story for ya ron. so as you know my last build was quite the spectacular looking ride. but in all honesty it lacked the performance i expected. i thought it was jetting, then i thought it was timing. after those 2 options were exhausted, that left the pipe as the culprit. so i went on a mod spree to see what i could do with the old DG pipes. i cut off the end cap, pulled out the silencers and cut off the remaining section to expose the convergent cone.
Image
i was amazed at the crap these pipes had inside them. it has an internal stinger with an ID of 40mm that flat slams into the 25mm silencer. not even close to being performance oriented. so that leaves the cone relativly unfinished and rathe useless. so here's what i did. i cut a pie out of the cone, squeezed it togeter and to finish the cone a lot better.
Image
then i fabbed up a stinger with an ID of 20mm, exactly as i did with the RZ pipes (accept no bend). i figure if it worket for the RZ, why not try the same on the RD. so now i can mount any of the toomey style silencers.
Image
jigged then up to the pipes and welded everything up giving them the real pipe look. i also lost a whopping 5lbs of thick trash metal. is it loud? hell ya!

so your asking youself, why am i posting this here? well here's why, i've been told by many "tuners" than these small stingers may give HP, but will hole your piston. well theoreticly thats correct, but according to the RZ and now the RD, thats more likely with fixed timing. with your CDI, the retarding nullifies the overheating and detonation problems. now get this, the engine will rev as far as i can stand it, it does not have a rev limit, power is not quite what the RZ has, but certainly would give it a run for the money. i would guess 50-60hp. it now pulls past redline easily in any gear, and i'm running 16/38 sprockets. with the overrev it's got to be doing well over 115mph. it was like riding a TZ. just beautifull! this was my first real hard ride on the bike, it was kinda useless before if you have nothing comming out of the corners. i had no problems dragging the knees and absolutly no odd characteristics i was expecting when i pushed the bike hard. its just a dream come true. and i couldn't have done it without your totaly awsome kit. the only down side was rebraking one of the bones in my foot.

so people ask "why RDD CDI?" this is why!

thanx mate, your CDI is the shit!

you can move this if you want, i don't want you to have to deal with fools holing their pistons copying me.

You dont have to tell me about it mate.
Ive spent the last 6 years of my life obsesing about how to give variable timing to the RDs.
Its has a been a driving obsesion because I knew just what its capable off.

It is rewarding to see even old school tuners rediscovering what a good Ignition can do.
Now you know why I smirk when I read comments like I got a newtronics on my RD and it runs like a raped Ape. You need to give the Newtronics boys a ride on your bike.

The RDDCDI is rewriting a lot of the old rules mate.
Now you only need to work on geting the TPS working and your bed done.

you guys know i'd love to visit you and show you how to ride, but i'm here and your there. i'm gonna work on a vid with audio for ya. give me a couple of days. i'm trying to stay off the thing till my foot heals but it's soooo tempting to do wheelies now. i was at a bike night last night and a guy came up to me and asked what yr it was. he told me about the CB750 he built back in the days, $20k into the engine, the only bike that beat him was a little bike called the RD350.LOL.

i doubt my foot is gonna heal as long as i have bikes in my garage. i'm gonna make a new shifter that will eliminate the stress on the affected area of my foot. that should allow me some healing time. dirt bike season is comming soon and if my foot doesn't heal i'm gonna be an angry mo fo.
i did purchase a new digicam yasterday, the thing is way too complicated and incompatible with my pc. the freakin instruction book is 250 pages. so i'll exchange it for something more usable and shoot some vids with sound for you guys. hopefully this weekend some time.
