Just another RDD digi cdi story

Post by Jaggu »

It began with the idea of getting an old lady back to her glory; the bike in the story is a RD, which has been neglected, quite a lot in the last few years. Typical Indian roadside mech’s buggering up all the while.

Anyway the bike was brought down from Pune and on points, sad part was the sixth gear was knocked, started with the job of getting her to shift atleast. While pulling the engine down came the discussion of how timing always used to have its mind, every 500 kms and it required correction, and obviously the idea of RDD CDI, shot of a mail to Ron and came the prompt reply, he has last few around and one can be sold to us. Ran down to COX town with engine n gear box in bits n pieces, needed Rons help in fixing gears and that was half a days job, thanks a ton Ron n Motor ;)

Next the wait for the goodies, one late night Sunday, after couple of beers walked to Rons and he hands over the parts.. hmmm neatly packed with a zip pouch with screws, nuts n bolts, that night slept with the CDI on bed :) Tuesday being the next holiday was the D day.

Morning motor walks in and we start off, he is a veteran with fixing CDI onto RD so he handled the base parts while I went about the coil way, as instructed overbore the coil bolt hole and they fit perfect. Hooked up the wires as instructed and kick and grinnn… firing happens, cant wait to start but due to some more mechanical jugad work couldn finish before beer time.

Yesterday (Saturday) woke up and cleaned the carb, finished some more wiring and stuff and finally the bike is ready to be fired up, put petrol, open tap wait for 10 secs, choke ON, second kick, bam bam bam bam.. ok this is coz one silencer doesn’t have the flute in, one thing.. no idle setting, no synching of carbs and the bike felt crisp!!

Some syncing, idle set and wow it really is smooth as silk, point to note the cylinders are sleeved with less than LT ports!! It’s a MESS out on that front!!

WTH this will be the real test for any CDI.. took the bike out today (Sunday), gave some gas and woooooooooohaaaaaaaa just pulls, ok power band is small due to the tiny hole ports, still bloody thing pulls atleast twice compared to the 2 weeks back run on points, well wanted to check the sixth gear also, so quick shifts through gears and you wont believe it bloody thing pulls clean at say around 35 KPH in sixth!!!! No hick ups, no coughs but clean, crisp and smooth power delivery.

Ok time to get the owner to ride, maniac just whacks open the throttle and vroooom before it hit the rev limited porting, ok he gets the idea and he pulls in the gears and disappears, after 5 mts comes back the other end with grinnnnnn on face, “bloody bike is so smooth, just like something that came out of a showroom” exact words he used and am scratching my head, such a shit set up off barrels and still the bike’s woken up like crazy.
Went to the local mech for fixing the flute bit, nope bloody silencer is buggered and wont budge, so a visit to gujli or a weld job is due soon, handed the flute to owner and rode her back, this time without the flute in polythene bag to stop me, gassed up and he he I like what am riding, gas up, overtake the Sunday brunch crowd, shift, gas and wehaaa who cares about the racket at exhaust bikes just flying, cant even imagine what it will be like once a decent work is done on the barrels.

Known Ron for 5 years, known his product to work on the drag bike and Motors CAX, but trust me RDD CDI is a product, which does wonders to any bike once hooked up, and if it can make a limpin ol granny to a 25 year ol babe, it can transform a decent set of barrels to a VIRGIN!!

Now wait starts for the papers to get cleared and then the phase 2 work starts, before that fix the rest of wiring and get that pipes fixed and hand over the beast to the owner to show off around town.

Ron, thank you!! And we are coming back for more

I hope she still retains the charming dark grey and gold livery. Plug on a pair of aftermarket chambers if not getting decent stock pipes. Nice to know that the 6th gear issue that was such a headscratcher for pune mechs, has been sorted finally.
