Hi my name is Leo I'm 3o summer of age, and have been riding bikes for 12 years, and mopeds since i turned 10 I've been pooking around for a couple of weeks now, and thougt i better introduce myself.

I've owned a suzuki 750GT (my first real love, man what a torque ) and a MuZ scorpion (the one with the Yamaha 660 single, from the teneré ) but she died a sudden death when I was overlooked i town by an elderly lady.
I surwieved without a scratsh, but my MuZ had gotten a bent frame, from when I threw her infront of me to take the heat.
The insurrance money was confiscated by my wife, and put into our house renowation projekt and our little girl ( yes children are wonderful, but it's a heavy expence on the budget)

Now a litle year later I have manneged to put a small amount away on my own private bank account, without my wifes knowledge , and I have just bought a Yamaha rd200 A model, from 1974. It reminds me of my old yamaha moped , a fs1 dx50 from 1976, that I spendt many hours porting, and hacking.

The RD200 is born with a dyna-starter system, and an advance/retard. My RD has gotten a wrecked stator, why I got it a fair price. But I thought rigt away that somekind of cdi system from an newer bike would fit somehow. I'm a machinist by trade so the idea cought me rigt away, that this fine machinery should/could be improved by a more modern electrical system.

And through my search, i became more stubbern by every mechanic, who told me the idea was bound to be doomed when i phoned them to hear if they had some cdi system from a newer RD350 ypvs.

So I was amased when i found this forum a couple of weeks ago, and glad to see that my thoughts of doing a better controlling system for these old lovely machines isn't such a stupid idea after all.

I have two little girls and a wife who does the same. i.e. takes away all my money. Saying its for the school fees, its for Uniforms, The kids need new shoe's etc. Thats why I started the RD parts business so that I could sneak RD parts out for my own bike.

Yours is not a stupid Idea. This kit has evolved just like you thought.
In the early 90s the Ind Suzuki 100cc two stroke was the first two stroke to arive in our country with a modern magneto system. And was right away adopted across the country to run on RDs Javas and other point bikes.
The reason this system failed was because they where spliting output for a single cylinder to two cylinders.
What most stupid people dont get is that there is a huge huge diffirence between just geting an engine to start and run and to actually perform.
That is why you have 250cc and 350cc two strokes that where strugling to touch 130 Kmph.

Welcome aboard. That stator looks quite interesting. I have never seen any with that kind of wiring. Reminds me of AC motors. Do you have any more shots of that?

Sorry it's not called a stator it's called an armature, just checked the Haynes manualu. And yes it's got a quite special winding, since it's both an electrical starter, plus a dynamo. " the yamaha 200cc models have a combinde electric starter and dynamo. For charging the battery the commutator or aramature assembly is wired in parralel with a field coil which is positioned inside the yoke assembly. The armature coil cuts through the magnetic lines of forces of the field coil as the engine runs so that a flow of altering current is induced. The alternating current is converted into direct current through the commutator brushes. The voltage of the direct current is maintained at a constant level by the voltage regulator, and supplied to each load of the ignition, lighting and signal system as well as to the battery.
For starting the machine the commutator is wired through the brushes in series with another field coil mounted in the yoke assembly. This form a potent DC motor when energised by the battery and exerts sufficient torque to turn the engine over" Quote from Hayens manual.

It might be hard to see it on the pictures, but some of the wiring has been "exploded away" by centrifugal forces (it's a very heavy unit ) . It was like that when I bought the machine. So I have no knowledge of how it works, but from what I have read from other rd200 owners, the system isn't any good at either starting or charging. And that's when I decided to get rid of the old system, and try to find somthing more up to date.
And Ron I am very greatfull for your quick response, but don't sacrifice your family time on my account. Remember Our small is what makes live worth living . And beside the wife (the wonderful girl ) has got me started on renowating the bathroom, so the next few dayes are signed up for if you know what I mean. (at least during the day time)
