Profiling older / founding memebers.

Post by chinoy »

Was reading an article the other day.
Where guys where discusing their bikes.

The pulsar is fast and powerfull.
The Karisma is deadlly looking a preimum sports bike.

Was wondering who these jokers where.
And then it comes out. Collage kids.

Made me think about the evolution of bikers.
From where we start. Where we end up.

And the Profile of most guys on RDD.
It may not be a bad idea for even the old members to post something about them selfs.
Their age, ther first bikes, ocupation etc.

In the end, even if the youngster reads an experienced pappy's post, he wont learn the lessons or gain the experience by reading, the hard way is the only way to really learn. And shouldnt this apply to life in general and not specifically to automobile culture? - An insecure younster's Rs 0.02 :D

Bikes
Yamaha RXG 1996 - 2001 Did 68K's on her.
Yamaha RD350 1983, 1985 (Both HT's) 2005. Still have both the RD's.
Working as a technical team leader in a BPO.

Did not ride any bike for almost 4 years because parents would'nt let me buy one. A cousin lost his life in a bike crash. Was riding a RD. Did'nt buy any bike because wanted to have a RD, was angry with my Parents for not letting me have it.

As a result of this have lost touch with riding. I guess the forced hiatus from biking has cost me a lot. Now slowly gaining confidence. Will get there eventually. I have hated small four strokes made in India, even as a kid. They are not bikes. Dont know what they are but sure as hell they are not bikes. The CD100's and splendors used to make my blood boil. Not any longer. If it werent for these bikes there would'nt be a motorcycle industry in India.

Todays college kids dont know what two strokes are about. Most of them havent rode any and are simply clueless about their performance. For them the Karizma and the Pulsar are the best thing to happen. Im sure any youngster who rides a RX100 in good nick will only have respect for the puny 100cc two stroke. Cant blame them if they think that Pulsar is a performance bike or a Karizma is a premium sportsbike. For this generation these bikes are to them what RX and RD's are to me. They have not experienced a two stroke. Thats what makes me sad.

They just need a ride on a RX or a RD to know what its all about :)

Rest as Motor said, hard way is the only way :)

1991 RX100 (sold) - It was my first bike. Bought it second hand quite cheap, on advice from my cousin that it can be brought to shape easily. Had a harrowing time bringing her back to shape. Any amount of money put in doesn't seem to better her health :(
Was so disgusted that booked a Pulsar, but cancelled that later.

Finally it dawned 14K bike(the price at which I bought it) is worth 32K(total amount spent on her including cost) and 24K bike is worth 24K(the price at which I bought my current bike) :)

Sold it finally for the same amount it was bought :(
Anyway it was a good learning experience and helped me in buying my second bike.

1994 RX100.

- Didn't knew how to ride a bycycle, until I got into college@18yrs(1993). Some astrologer predicted that I'll have a major accident on two wheels by the age of 21, so was never allowed to ride. Still once rode Ind Suzuki AX100 with my cousin as pillion, since he had a fractured hand, to get some fuel, this was when I was 13yrs and hasn't meet the astrologer
- In college, started off on my friends Kinetic Honda. Did a small trip Pune-Khopoli-Pune on it with friends. No DL, so no female was ready to sit behind hence was riding all alone
- In 1995, started to learn how to ride a geared scooter on my dad's Vijay Super. Scooter now lying in pieces as mech place :(
- In 1998 started to ride on my cousin's LML NvSpl and got my DL made in 1998
- In 1999 bought my own Nv Spl. Used it till 2000 covered some 20k km on it, since then dad using it. Sometime I still go for a small spin.
- In 2000 bought my first bike. Suzuki Fiero. Still riding it. Closing on 93k mark.
- In 2002 bought my friend's RX100, 1996 model. Used it for few months and then sold it off to another friend.
- In 2004 bought Bullet Electra 2004, after I was hit with touring bug. Covered close to 33k on it. Still riding it.
- In 2004 bought the first RXC made by Ron. Engine seized and now running in street port 135cc avtar.
- In 2005 got my friend's CBZ as he moved to US. Taking care of it and covered over 10k on it so far.

Married with no (legitimate) children and no desire for them either.

Occupation: Pretending to be a techwriter in a large American MNC along with a part-time job I hesitate to mention.

Bikes Owned:
1990 - present: KB-100 RTZ
1992 - 1994: FZR-600 Pure Sport ("Preserved" for friend while he was abroad, not owned)
2005 - present: 84 RD that will hopefully be an RC special soon

In the pipeline:
Manan's 84 RD that might come to me for "preservation"
Ditto with Jaideep's Bullet 500

Frankly not a 2-stroke / 4-stroke person. Just want to lay my hands on anything that offers maximum bang for the buck, therefore riding an RD presently. So far not too happy with it. Hoping the new setup will change that. Nevertheless, saving up for something genuinely visceral that will hopefully arrive by the year-end ;)

Presently working as a Manager with a consulting firm.

Dad had a Yezdi Classic which he loved, but sold for a Chetak about 16 years ago.
I still keep scolding him on his selling of the Yezdi, he stays silent!!
So, grew up on the Yezdi and the Chetak.
My first bike was / is the RD 350 which I have had for the past couple of years. Also have a Kinetic Honda.
So, its been two strokes all the way :)

Age - 24

The first bike I rode was a '94 RX100.

Have had some long-standing relationships with a '86 RX100 and a '85 RD350. Both were freinds bikes, but rode them quite a bit. The RD was one hell of a ride and from the first day I rode it, I always craved for one. I have not managed to pick up one as yet, but I will do atleast before I bite the dust! (Too optimistic maybe considering they are turning into white elephants as every day goes by)

Currently own a '95 Yezdi RK. My first fully owned baby. I know for sure I will never sell this babe off, even if I have to store it in a show-case in my living room 10 years down the line!

History:

A long story that makes me misty-eyed, and hopefully won't bore you to death. Started working at age 17, just after my 10th grade exams. Served as designer/coder/cto of the co, and needed wheels. A good friend (then co-boss) suggested I look around for a Vijay Super, that I could probably buy for 2k (I made 4k then). I never found one, and it never happened.

Said friend was a former (fully company-sponsored) RD350 rider, who later switched to a Bullet for economy. I kept in touch over the years as my life turned topsy-turvy (details are withheld for the movie rights). Learned to ride on his Bullet (me 48kgs, 120kgs of him as pillion. Picture it and chuckle.) Spent a number of years lusting after a Bullet, planning and picturing the mods I would make, etc. I got close, but it never happened.

During this time, I was already a regular visitor to RDDreams (pre-forum days, when it was eindiancompanies.com). However, common wisdom and back-of-the-envelope calculations had affirmed that I would never be able to afford and RD, so Bullet-lusting continued. I continued to do better at work, including enduring the horrible dot-com bust and subsequent unemployment.

Switched tracks to IT journalism and continued to visit RDDreams everyday. Got Ron's ICQ ID, pestered him with inane questions like "Will there be any adverse effects of painting my engine black?". I'm glad that logging chat conversations wasn't as easy then as it is today (I hope). Bullet-lusting continued. Then slowly but surely, all my lifelong friends and links to my past life hopped on planes and moved abroad for better prospects. The last departure from Mumbai airport is when I snapped.

The next week was an unusual time to be in my head. But the gist of it is, I was sick of compromise. I decided I would be kidding myself if I believed I really wanted a Bullet. Nay, I wanted an RD! I wanted that 350cc bike that instinctively looked better to me as a child; like it meant business; it wasn't like the Bullet, in which case I could see most of the other side of the world through the gaping void beneath the tank. The RD was packed. Peti-packed, and I knew from my friend that it could move.

Naturally the decision did not elicit positive responses from said friend. In his time, he had broken pretty much every bone there was to break in high-speed crashes. He had spent wads of cash and time, which luckily for him, was company-sponsored at the time. He had been down the road and it wasn't smooth. But I was not to be dissuaded. Other friends were called upon to turn the tide. I remember one particular ride from Opera house to Bandra, during which a friend tried his best logic to convince me to get something practical. I don't remember all of the conversation, but it ended in: "Ok, I guess your mind's made up....... so when you get it, please give me a ride!" :)

I had scouted out a junk RD that had been the learning and bone-breaking tool for several school friends. It would run with a bit of tinkering, and I would have to balance it so the seat didn't fall off. But just sitting on that bike on the main stand was enough to seal my fate. Checked out another RD, but wiser minds prevailed and it was deemed unworthy.

Finally ended up at Johnny's, where I took a ratty-looking silver bike out for a test ride. I was pillion, and my large friend was fighting a crippling migraine. We took the bike for a rip for about a kilometer. The migraine completely disappeared, and I was told that I was screaming like a girl the whole time. In the next two days, I pulled the fattest strings I could find and walked out of the bank with a 35k loan in cash, without any paperwork. Went to Johnny, handed 18k over, rode out on my first-ever bike -- a 1984 Silver RD350HT with clear papers, formerly owned by an ACP.

The next year or so was spent with weekends at the shop and large wads of cash in the backpack. Over time, I changed everything, save the bodywork and engine internals. I later discovered that I god a better deal than I imagined. The bike was unsleeved, running sixth(!) oversize PP pistons and an LT (tongue) barrel, which I later removed for my first 8k buzz :). She has been my only, and daily ride through two jobs and one marriage, and seldom let me down (literally and figuratively). More recently, I've been through two engine rebuilds and the first-ever cosmetic rebuild. Sadly, on one sedate commute back home, my luck (read 2t oil) ran out. She now rests peacefully at St. Anthony's home for the 2-wheeled destitute, pending a triumphant second coming. Time changes priorities and beliefs, but some things you hold on to (... next, on the Hallmark Channel!)

I still own my RD, and am caretaker for my brother-in-law's recently restored Yezdi Roadking, and Derek's RD, which has proven to be my bike's twin in every respect (save for a bit more GO!!!! ;) ). I love her like my own. I don't ride fast unless I have a clear runway. I don't traffic-race. I don't pose. I'm not rich, but I try not to compromise.

Roll credits.
