RDD and TDR tie up to Bring you Carbon Fiber Reeds.

Post by chinoy »

ANother first for RDD in India.

We will be offering you Carbon Fiber Reeds for all bikes and scooters.
We have have tied up with TDR reeds a leader in the feild to bring you the best.

Im planing on doing a trial run to see how popular it becomes.
It wont be cheap.

Let me also say this is not something new at RDD. We have been run carbon fiber reeds in previous builds. WIth good results.
A good Example would be Anands Track Bike.

You all wondered what gave us that throtel responce and howl that no other bike could match. Now you know.

I first started playing with reeds back in 99 started with the Total Crap they sell in Chenai. The went to importing glass fiber and steel reeds.

Now we will make our own Carbon FIber reeds for Indian bikes.

WIll post prices as soon as the stocks arive.

Stocks are here.
The carbon fiber is from TDR. Its properties picked by Tony himself.
And the target RPM Mid to upper for The Yamaha Twins RD/RZ/LC/Banshee/ and RXG135/100 etc.

These reeds go for between 40$-50$ per reedblock on ebay and more elsewhere.

We will offer them for 20$ per reed block. To start off.
In whatever patern you want. i.e. SIngle Stage, dual stage, with bridge without bridge etc. For the RX/RD/LC/RZ/Shee.
For the 6 Petal Blocks they will be 30$ per reed block.

Have only one sheet. And geting more sheets can take months.

Ps: Yes a RD would need two. Because it has 2 Reed Blocks.
Or you could buy one set and do a Multi Freq setup.
Where you mix both stock and carbon fiber.

My thougts on reeds TDR have allways been one step ahead in performance reeds. Even better than Boysen.

Well we have prety much sold out on this first batch. With oders pouing in from the US / Pune / Delhi and all kinds of places. So looks like we will be doing a few more sheets just to keep up with the demand.
Not bad considering Ive not even started cuting into this sheet or run the reeds.

Ive shot myself in the foot by ofering diffirent configurations now everybody wants me to explain to them what will work well and why. Sheesh. Your just suposed to order what you want man.

Notes:

While others where allready playing with the simulators in the late 90s and early 2000.
We where busy testing reeds.

This is how we tested them.
We riged up a cylinder with only the reed block. No manifold.
Then ran the engine on one cylinder. We had a bottle of Fuel in a spray can and a Timing light where we could delay the strobing. Something like what you get ready made from OTC these days.

With this set-up we tested various reeds and reed materials.
Needless to say I found the Boysen Dual stage fiber reeds to be the worst of the lot.
The reason being the thin petals would lift by the .7mm thick base would never lift. All the energy to lift the thicker base reed was being bleed off by the smaller reeds lifting.

I could pobally write 10 pages on the data and observations made.
But will try and sumarize it into one para.

I look at the reeds like a musican looks at a wind instrument with petals.
So does any musical instrument make sweet music with multiple reeds ? NO !
So thats my view on Dual stage reeds not good.

Next is the concept of single stage reeds.
Where the center bridge in your reed blcok is removed. And you use a single large reed.
This seems to work ok. But reed life is serioully compromised and you can expect to change the reeds frequentlly. You can resolve the reed breaking problem to quite an extent by using a reed stoper plate.
But for all out power and if your willing to change reeds every 2-3 races its ok to run without a stoper.

My favourite setup is a mixture of petals. Where you run two diffirent reed materials.
This ensures that at any given rpm at least one material is in it optimum range.

So say you have a Banshee.
Id keep the top reeds on the block stock i.e. OEM and the bottom id run Carbon fiber.
This allows you to get away with buying only set for your twin.

Lastlly to the stock RX100 guys who think pluging this in will turn their bikes into a rocket.
Im sorry you will be disapointed.
If you where to spend 350$ and buy your self some V-FOrce reed Blcoks. Youd be lucky to see a gain of 3-4% in power. So dont expect buying carbon fiber to change your bucket of bolts into a rocket.
No they wont fix your leaking crank seals and other problems with the bike.

Well Ive used many diffirent kinds of carbon fiber for reeds.
Like for Anands RX we got it off a V-Force reed block.

So I just wasnt sure how this particular carbon would perform.
Hence have not shiped out any units yet.

Well I had a chance to test them on my stock RD reed cahes. Needless to say the results where simplly anazing. I can now start cuting and shiping pending orders.

As a sinde note your reed blcoks ned to be in good nick. If it has a deep steep or is badlly worn then even new carbon fiber reeds cant help you.
