A lot of times you will see a common phenemon when people install the RDD CDI. The bike would be runing fine till they install the CDI after which new problems crop up.
I call this the bottle neck phenemon.
Every engine, car, bike, two stroke or four stroke engine has diffirent bottle necks that limit their performance.
On the two strokes. And esp. the RDs the bigest bottle neck holding back the engine from achiving its true potential it is the Ignition system.
As is the case with the RXs
Buying the RDD CDI removes this huge bottle neck and sudenlly your engine is flying because you have removed the largest bottle neck holding it back.
But removing this bottle neck can crop up other bottle necks that you never even knew existed cause the Ign was holding you back.
On a stock bike these bottle necks are hardly noticeable. But most RDs are far from stock when they get the upgrade.
So I have compiled a list of bottle necks that you can run into after installing the RDD CDI
1. Air Flow.
Both on the RD and the RX the air filter is restrictive. As long as your a good boy and dont rev out more than 6500 on the RDs and 8000 RPM on the RXs alls fine. but with the CDI your bike now is eager to rev out a lot more. Here the air filter becomes your next bottle neck. A good foam filter, or wiremesh or K&N should remove that restriction.
2. Fuel Flow.
The ammount of power an engine makes is directly propratnatie to the ammount of gas it can burn. With your early Ignition system. Your fuel flow requirements where so pidlly badlly setup systems would continue to run. Fix the ignition and now your engine wants to rev out. You have increased your redline by 1000-3000 RPM so your fuel flow requirements needs to catch up. Common problems here are
a. Crapy after market fuel taps that only flow from one vent at a time.
b. Breather holes in your tank cover that a blocked with years of dirty and curd.
It is critical that you connect two clear lines to your two exits. Put the petcock on and watch flow. Both lines should flow the same. And the flow rate should remin the same. If it starts to taper off after some time you know you have an air lock / breather problem.
3. Crappy Electriclas and switch gear.
Your Ign s/w is old and falling to bits. Every time you go over a bump it break and makes contact. Frayed earth wires and other loose contacts.
Also cause problems.
These 3 points account for 99% of all install related problems.
The RDD CDI removes the single largest bottle neck to any engine.
But its not a miricle worker. And cant cure all the ills of your bike.
We still havent figure out how to get it to run on watter or fix all the other problems on your bike.
But our objective is to
1. Improve effiency of your engine
2. Make your engine last longer run cooler
3. Improve power output
4. Improve mileage
5. Drop harmfull emmisions.
6. Let you forget about your ignition for at least another 10 years.
7. Improve your lighting for safer driving at night.
8. Make your bike move better and faster than it did the day it came out of the showroom.
This I think we have achived.
